of the Mexican dollar, so largely used in Chine induces me to think they have really been made in China, At all events the Chinaman says they were sent to him by his son, a merchant in Hong Kong, and, as he sent them in 5 separate parcels by 5 separate passengers, there can be little doubt he knew what he was doing, but it is not easy to get

at him.

"We of course put the matter at once in the hands

of the Police, but they think they could not get a con- viction of "guilty knowledge"; he would not have taken the bad coin in a lump sum to a Bank (where it was likely

to be detected), but would have mixed a few at a time with

other money in his shop till, and so have got quit of it by

degrees among his customers.

"Have you come across anything similar at home,

or is this the first case of it? I have seen notices of

something of the kind in Tasmania, and also in South Africa

One of the coins forwarded by Mr Anderson was assay

-ed and found to be of the fineness of 904-5. Both the

pieces were of almost exact standard weight. Their diameter

was slightly too great, and the designs and lettering

not reproduced with exactness.
